Job Description

Summary of Key Functions

  • Prepare and implement community mobilization plan in the project target communities
  • Provide support in conducting studies from the target communities
  • Facilitate establishment of knowledge and information sharing channel to communities and project participants
  • Conduct trainings for the project participants on livestock and poultry husbandry
  • Raising awareness of the communities on livestock rearing and poultry husbandry
  • Establish linkages mechanism with Veterinary Field Unit (VFU) and the project beneficiaries
  • Keep clinical records of livestock and poultry and provide necessary reports
  • Follow up vaccination seasons and keep project participants’ knowledge updated
  • Provide regular awareness raising to women on personal and environmental hygiene, water sanitation, milk processing, health care issues and how some diseases can spread from animals to humans
  • Conduct regular visits from the livestock and poultry and provide treatment if necessary
  • Document Effectively all information related to project successes, challenges and best practices, create a resource bank of pictures, videos, and most significant change stories from the beneficiaries
  • Identify and build strategic linkages, relations, collaborations and networks with partners and other stakeholders
  • Treat sick or injured animals by prescribing medication and advice
  • Plan and execute animal nutrition and reproduction programs
  • Inspect animal housing facilities to determine their cleanliness and adequacy
  • Contribute in livestock purchase, distribution process and livestock feedstuff
  • Coordinate in the process of referral of sick livestock and poultry from CARE communities to Veterinary Field Unit (VFU)
  • Identify centers for the gatherings, meetings, workshops, trainings and other events of the livestock activities
  • Participate in all trainings and meetings conducted by the project and other stakeholders as part of staff capacity building plan and networking
  • Perform any other duties within the spirit and purpose of the role as assigned by the supervisor

Project manager, field supervisor, and CARE internal departments,

Duty Locations: Paktia sub office wih travel to the targeted  Districts  

KEY RESULT EXPECTED

  • Project target communities are well organized and beneficiaries are well aware on the concept of livelihood improvement through livestock and poultry distribution
  • The project is able to effectively conduct baseline, midline, endline or any other studies from the target communities with the support of Veterinary officer
  • Livestock beneficiaries have a good understanding of livestock and poultry husbandry
  • Beneficiaries who have received livestock and poultry are linked with the VFUs and receive vet services
  • Regular reports are provided on livestock and poultry status to the project supervisor and MEL unit
  • The dairy cows and chickens are vaccinated based on the seasons and needs
  • The livestock and poultry beneficiaries are well aware of the environmental hygiene, water sanitation, milk processing, health care issues and how some diseases can be spread from animals to humans
  • Regular visits are conducted from the distributed dairy cows and poultries
  • All projects’ successes, challenges and best practices are well documented and  a resource bank containing project documents, pictures, videos and most significant change stories from the beneficiaries are well documented and the same reported to MEL unit and the project supervisor
  • Strong linkages, relations, collaborations are well established between CARE and other stakeholders
  • A responsive nutrition and reproduction program is designed and implemented
  • Regular monitoring visits are conducted from the project target communities and mentoring are provided on how to maximize the use of standard procedures on livestock rearing and poultry husbandry
  • Other duties that were handed over by the supervisor are well managed and the intended result were produced

Job Requirements

Core Competencies:

  • Well aware of gender norms and gender sensitive topics
  • Take responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work
  • Proven experience, skills and knowledge and preferred experience on managing veterinary clinic as veterinary doctor, dairy management, animal health care, feed/fodder management, processing technologies and livestock extension services
  • Willingness and enthusiasm for working with rural and vulnerable communities living in remote areas of the country
  • Good skills of Financial Management
  • Knowledge of community development, empowerment and mentoring approaches
  • Well familiar in community mobilization research, monitoring and evaluation and report writing
  • Demonstrated experience in community economic development and management(own business or by providing business development services), experience with small business financing, market analysis and market research
  • Good skills of facilitation of meetings, orientation sessions and trainings

Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor Degree in Veterinary Science, Animal Science or Livestock Development, Animal Health, Dairy Science/Technology or related field

Languages Skills: Fluency in written and spoken English is preferred, Dari and Pushto languages

Education: 

Bachelor’s Degree in Veterinarian field, Master's degree is preferred.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years of work experience in similar field
