Job Description

ABOUT THE JOB

The Child Friendly Space (CFS) Officer has the overall responsibility to ensure that quality psychosocial support activities both community-based and focused are delivered to children’s caregivers and adolescent in a timely and efficient manner with the support of the Protection Coordinator.

Responsibilities:

  • Define psychosocial activities to be implemented according to the children’s ages and situation and contribute to the development of a child friendly space curriculum.
  • Deliver the CFS curriculum and other recreational activities to the children with/or without their parents.
  • Prepare and implement recreational activities for targeted children (large events or small groups).
  • Identify within the activities the children in need of further assistance. Act in the best interest of the child.
  • Promote, ensure, and establish the child as a central actor in the activities.
  • Understand children as the main actors in their own development and encourage them in decision making of matters that affects them.
  • Communicate with children in a protective manner ensuring the respect of their rights.
  • Create a positive and trustful atmosphere while interacting with children encouraging them to express their needs and ensuring their feeling of safety.
  • Identify materials required for activities preferred by children and proceed to procurement process after request.
  • Ensure a safe and child-friendly atmosphere in the Child Friendly Space facilities.
  • Accomplish her/his duty of care protecting children from any form of maltreatment/abuse.
  • Works closely with the child protection actor on monitoring and evaluating process of children at risk, giving feedback from the child’s participation in CFS.
  • Close supervision on young children during group plays and avoid harmful exercises.
  • Ensure activities are appropriate for the physical and mental capacity of children.
  • Assist in the coordination of Child Protection awareness raising events and information campaigns for children and parents and assist in the coordination of them.
  • Organize joint events with children from the host communities for community harmonization.
  • Track participation numbers of children attending CFS activities.
  • Monitor and report protection needs/issues and gaps in and around the Child Friendly Spaces
  • Ensure timely submission of weekly and monthly reports

Job Requirements

ABOUT YOU

To be successful in this role you must have:

Experience and technical competencies: 

  • At least 2-3 years of work experience in psychological/psychosocial counseling, preferably with IDPs/refugees/returnees.
  • Demonstrated strong experience working with vulnerable clients, including survivors of SGBV and victims of child abuse.
  • Strong knowledge of child-friendly interviewing techniques and communicating with children.
  • Familiarity with IASC Guidelines on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support In Emergency Settings.
  • Understanding the psychosocial support needs of IDPs/refugees in Afghanistan.

Education/qualifications:

  • University degree in Psychology or Social Work, and a valid certificate from the Ministry of Health certifying as professional psychosocial counsellor.
  • An understanding of the basic principles of humanitarian work, human rights, protection, and the needs of internally displaced persons and refugees in Afghanistan.
  • Interest in humanitarian work and human rights, ability and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to clearly express one’s thoughts, to analyze and present information clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to set priorities and show initiative, to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.

Languages:

  • Good knowledge of English, fluency in Pashto and good knowledge of Dari
