Job Description

Project Background

Afghanistan Nutrition projects are aligned with the country strategy, cluster, and donor priorities and HRP process with main aim to save lives, alleviate human suffering and reduce the impact of disasters by helping people in need become more independent.

  • The nutrition response supports both nutrition-sensitive and specific interventions that contribute to the prevention, detection, and management of malnutrition. It largely focuses on filling gaps in Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition services i.e., Support nutrition screening for children under 5 years and PLW, treatment and follow-up of SAM and MAM cases.
  • The programs also integrate robust Maternal, Infant and Young Child Nutrition in emergency components to equip participants with knowledge and skills on optimal feeding practices to prevent acute malnutrition.

Job Purpose

The Nutrition intern will support the implementation and monitoring of all preventive and curative nutrition program activities under the current projects in line with IMC nutrition minimum standards as well as aligning programming to the national IMAM guidelines and minimum package of essential MIYCN services for Afghanistan.

He/she will work with nutrition officers and nutrition staff within the provincial level in East region and act as back up staff for nutrition officers when on leave.

Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Act as back up staff for nutrition officers when on leave in East region.
  • Work closely with nutrition officers and nutrition staff within HSCs to ensure accurate data collection and reporting.
  • Assist in preparing nutrition-related reports and ensuring deliverables adhere to IMC and donor standards and quality controls.
  • Contribute to communications and media work as required in close coordination with nutrition officers.
  • Support nutrition officers in documentation of lessons learned case studies and success stories.
  • Conducting regular supportive supervision and monitoring of nutrition activities.
  • Facilitate nutrition training in project locations for midwives, nutrition counsellors and OPD SAM/MAM nurses.
  • Represent International Medical Corps in nutrition meetings with MOPH, PHCC, PHD, PND, WFP, UNICEF and Partners within the provinces and national level.
  • Conduct follow up monitoring of nutrition related activities and document findings to feed into improved programming.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the line manager.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

Essential

  1. Afghan National.  FEMALE candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
  2. Recently graduated in the last 6 months in Nutrition, Public Health, or another related field.
  3. Strong attention to detail and accuracy is essential.
  4. Ability to write correctly in English and to communicate matters orally and in writing.
  5. Should be able to maintain accurate/precise records, to perform detailed work and to handle a large volume of work quickly and accurately under time constraints.

 

Experience

  1. Any previous experience working in nutrition projects is a plus.

 

Competency

  1. Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in team.
  2. The candidate must have strong command in English, Dari and Pashto Languages.
  3. Computer skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint
