Job Description

Position Summary:

The MHPSS Counselors are an important and integral part of War Child programs implementation team. He/she will provide Psychosocial Support including interviewing vulnerable adolescents and youth (specially Bacha Bazi survivors), providing counseling (individual and group), and referral of special cases to other service providers. The MHPSS counselor will be also raising awareness of community people on MHPSS issues, identification and assistance of youths need MHPSS support, etc.

Specific duties and responsibilities:

  • Develop field activities plan in close coordination with the provincial coordinator.
  • Review and refine the existing PSS materials and adjust the topics in order to cover the needs of beneficiaries decreasing stress and depression.
  • Conduct intake and post-session assessments for all MHPSS beneficiaries.
  • Assessing and identification of beneficiaries for psychosocial support in target communities
  • Provide PSS sessions in groups and individually to adolescents and youths in community structures (schools, Madrasa, Masjid, University, etc) and as well as family members, when needed.
  • Schedule and conduct field meetings with families, community leaders, parents, and teachers to raise their awareness of MHPSS.
  • Conduct psychosocial pre-developed training plans in target communities.
  • Conduct PSS sessions with vulnerable adolescents, Youth and families individually and in groups when needed.
  • Provide context-related PSS support at the individual (especially survivors of Bacha Bazi), family, and community members’ level. 
  • Identify youth and adolescents, who are suffering from advanced mental health problems and ensure timely referral and follow-up of cases in need of further support.
  • Conduct group meetings and brainstorming sessions with beneficiaries for MHPSS-related activities (especially survivors of Bacha Bazai)
  • Maintain regular follow with project team and provide them with technical support and advice when needed.
  • Coordinate with other program activities and provide support when needed.
  • Whenever assigned by Senior Management staff, conduct national-level coordination with IEA, UN, and INGOs 
  • Proactively participate in professional development activities with a strong commitment to learning knowledge and skills
  • Other tasks as assigned by the Project Manager and WC Management
 

Job Requirements

Academic Background and Knowledge/ Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., General Psychology, Counselling, Social Work, MD, Mental Health) with 3-4 years of working experience
  • Additional qualification or certification in Mental Health, Psychology, Counseling, or another relevant field is highly desirable
  • Ability to manage a large No of youths and adolescents
  • Strong understanding of MHPSS in Afghan context  

Skills

  • Excellent communication skills both in writing and oral including presentation, networking, and interpersonal skills: English, Pashto, Dari
  • Excellent computer, MS Office skills
  • Flexibility and ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Good reporting and writing skills
  • Should be familiar with the area’s cultural traditions and its sensitiveness
  • Data management skills and familiarity with applications e.g., Kobo and other related programs
