BBC Media Action delivers a portfolio of SBCC [Social and Behaviour Change Communication] oriented humanitarian and development projects in Afghanistan.

Background

BBC Media Action Afghanistan is delivering projects on empowering local media, journalists and aid workers learn how to undertake effective communications to reach and engage with local communities. 

 

Job Description:

Overall Purpose of the Job

Reporting to the training manager, the media trainer will help partner media organisations, local   journalists and community aid workers learn and deliver lifeline programmes and assist them develop quality programmes and communication packages in their daily output that can inform, empower and connect local communities. He/she will be responsible for the capacity building of our partner radio stations in provinces which broadcast to affected communities.. He/She will use the insights from research into training needs, and expertise on best practice in building the capacity of local media outlets.

Main duties

  • Develop training material, including handouts and presentations on lifeline programming, editorial, technical and studio gears. 
  • Provide training, advice, support, resources, ideas, and help with, through a mixture of email and phone contact, in person and online training to each partner station and local journalists.
  • Train the partner FM radio stations and build their skill to produce relevant radio outputs.
  • Review the script, comment, and guide the local FM station partners for any recommended changes.
  • Manage relationships with the local FM stations.
  • Support the design of training workshops, and managing logistics and arrangements for training and mentoring sessions.
  • Support local FM stations and local journalists understand and use online learning resources that the project will provide.
  • Advise local FM stations and local journalists to help them maintain strong production and editorial values.
  • Use project contacts and link local FM stations to civil society contributors, interviewees and aid workers for their content on lifeline programming, where appropriate.
  • Support other project teams in the production of other project media outputs where necessary.
  • Perform other duties as requested by the manager and liaise with other internal teams as required.
 

Job Requirements

Essential skills and experience

  • At least 3 years of media training and mentoring experience and minimum of 5 years of experience in journalism. 
  • Experience in radio production with proven experience exercising editorial responsibility and judgement on short and long formats.
  • Experience of making multi-media programming on health, social and educational topics.
  • Ability to assess safety and security issues involved in media production and reporting.
  • Fluent in local Dari and or Pashto languages and good understanding of  English language
  • Ability to travel to the provinces for the training and mentoring purposes.
  • Strong planning and organising skills, including some understanding of project management.
  • Hands on digital storytelling
  • Ability to use common audio and video editing tools
