Job Description

Job Purpose:

The Field Research Manager is responsible for the overall coordination and implementation of the research activities at the country level. The field research Manager will collaborate with relevant departments and stakeholders in-country and at headquarters to deliver on the technical and administrative requirements of the project. 

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Participate actively in training sessions provided by IMC HQ study team.
  • Implement the qualitative component of the study at field level; facilitate qualitative interviews and discussions according to agreed workplan with IMC HQ study team and provide (English-translated) detailed notes and/or transcripts from qualitative data collection.
  • Support with the quantitative component of the study at field level; close collaboration with UNICEF and relevant nutrition partners in the five provinces included in this study to obtain qualitative inputs.
  • Follow-up on questions and feedback from IMC HQ study team pertaining to data quality on a timely basis.
  • Coordinate sensitization and information sessions with project stakeholders, including community and government authorities.
  • Support the data quality review process and updates to datasets as required for secondary analysis.
  • Oversee data entry into the selected platform and ensure high level of data quality through regular data audits during the research cycle.
  • Ensure the research progresses according to the project plan by holding regular review meetings with in-country stakeholders; participate in HQ-led research review meetings, and regularly update the HQ study team on progress of the study.
  • Ensure the thorough application of research ethical procedures, including informed consent practices, availability of community-based feedback and response channel and application of IMC Code of Conduct.
  • Support research uptake activities such as dissemination of study results to national cluster stakeholders and MOH.

  • Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) standards within International Medical Corps and amongst beneficiaries served by International Medical Corps.

  • Promotes and encourages a culture of compliance and ethics throughout the International Medical Corps. As applicable to the position, maintains a clear understanding of International Medical Corps and donor compliance and ethics standards and adheres to those standards.  Conducts work with the highest level of integrity.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

Essential:

  1. Afghan National. 
  2. Bachelor’s degree in nutrition, public health, epidemiology, social science or a related field.

Desirable:

         Master’s degree will be preferred

Experience:

  1. At least 3 or more years of professional experience managing research activities in limited resource settings.
  2. Experience with training and supervising data collection teams.
  3. Demonstrated ability to critically evaluate data for quality issues and address them appropriately with data collection teams.
  4. Experience with qualitative methods, including conducting one-one interviews, facilitating focus group discussions, and reporting of qualitative data.

Competency :

  1. Ability to work effectively with government, community leaders, international/national organizations, donors, partners and other International Medical Corps relationships.
  2. Strong communication skills, able to effectively present information clearly and respond appropriately to questions from senior managers and headquarters staff, counterparts, senior government leaders and donors.
  3. Strong supervisory and organizational skills.
  4. Willingness to undertake regular travel to study sites.
  5. Ability to cope with stress; hardship; patience and flexibility and willingness to work additional hours in order to meet tight deadlines.
  6. Fluent in local language (Speaking – Reading – Writing) and high-level English proficiency (Speaking – Reading – Writing).
