Job Description

  • Reports to Medical doctor in mobile health team
  • Collaborates with: Members of the mobile health team (MHT), and the project staff  
  • Actively contributes to MHT and the project team meeting at sub office and field level.

Special Terms and Conditions

  • The midwife will be basically responsible for safe home-based deliveries and newborn care in the catchment areas/SDPs of the MHNT 24/7 where mothers do not have access to maternal and newborn care services or cannot be served by routine MHNT during the day time.
  • Regular provision of doorstep postnatal care will remain an integral part of the assigned tasks and contractual obligations while other antennal, family planning and counseling services will remain optional and she can perform it as per need.
  • In order to make sure that the all pregnant mothers have access to safe and on time delivery, newborn and postnatal care services in their homes/villages, the midwife needs to have list of all pregnant women with EDD (estimated date of delivery) that will be developed in coordination with MHNT staff, community mobilizer and CHWs if available. 
  • She should have the capacity/potential and flexibility (in terms of physical health, willingness for frequent movement, family permission for overnight stay with patients/mothers) to undertake above mentioned tasks round most probably late afternoon and during the night.
  • She will not be necessarily accountable for conducting ANC, FP and routine counseling sessions within the catchment area during the day time provided that enough overnight performance are achieved and reported/recorded.
  • She should be the resident of local communities/SDPs under the catchment area of the MHNT or should be ready to shift his family to the target area for 24/7 service delivery with written commitment to ensure staff retention as per project needs

Summary of Key Functions

  • Conduct doorstep safe home-based deliveries in the catchment area of the MHNT covering target service delivery points (SDPs) with required preparedness including long listing or identification of pregnant women and follow up via estimated date of delivery (EDD) approach.
  • Assist mothers to ensure breastfeeding during 1st hour of delivery via demonstration/positing the baby as per EBF guidelines.
  • Maintain main focus on postnatal care (PNC) and neonatal care (NNC) services to postpartum women and newborn babies including health education and community awareness on exclusive breastfeeding, mother nutrition, prevention of infection 
  • When and where needed and possible, provide mother and child nutrition counselling for lactating mothers including exclusive breast feeding for children 0-5 months and addition of supplementary food for children ages 5-24 months
  • Community awareness and health education on birth-spacing or family planning counselling and deliver required/volunteer services to eligible women of reproductive age with specific focus on modern contraceptive methods.
  • Any other duties within the scope of work and project needs or assigned by the supervisor.

KEY RESULT EXPECTED

    1. Pregnancy and delivery care.
  • To provide doorstep skilled birth attendant services to the mothers who cannot attend the health facility, during her worktime
  • Provide at least four time ANC services for each pregnant women during the whole period of pregnancy according to national guideline.
  • Teach danger signs of pregnancy, delivery and postpartum women to each mother during pregnancy and post-partum phases
  • Provide advices to pregnant women and mother in laws about delivery plan and giving birth at nearby health facility

  • Provide Postnatal Care (PNC) and Neonatal Care (NNC) services to mother and newborn at least four times after delivery
  • Advice mothers on breast feeding and the importance of colostrum
  • Advice mothers on newborn vaccination
  • Provide counselling on personal hygiene for mother and the new born
    1. counselling for lactating mothers on
  • advice to mothers on their own nutrition
  • provision of counselling infant and young child feeding practices
  • encouraging mothers to child vaccination
    1. Family Planning Counselling and Services
  • Provide counselling on modern contraceptive methods
  • Provision of the modern contraceptive health items available at MHT

Referring of cases for other methods.

4.3 Education and working experience

  • Graduated from an accredited/recognized midwifery institute/program with at least two-year work experience in related field, previous BPHS experience is desirable.

 4.4 Languages Skills:

Fluency in spoken and written Dari and Pashtu is a requirement or at least local language where she is assigned to work.
