About Concern Worldwide- Afghanistan

Identity: Concern Worldwide is a non-governmental, international, humanitarian organization dedicated to the reduction of suffering and working towards the ultimate elimination of extreme poverty in the world’s poorest countries. Currently, Concern has been working in Afghanistan since 1998, when it responded to an earthquake disaster in Takhar province.  Currently Concern has been working in Takhar and Badakhshan provinces undertaking both emergency response and long term developmental work in the areas of livelihood security, primary education and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.

Job Description

Main Duties & Responsibilities:

Technical Assistance:

  • Facilitate the setup of men’s’ and women’s Self-Help Groups (SHG) and ensure their effective functioning.
  • Supervise active participation of SHGs member in capacity building sessions and in savings and credit activities in order to ensure sustainability of the SHGs.
  • Provide technical support to project technical staff in relation to a series of topics such as SHGs management, agribusiness, enhanced agricultural production, post-harvest handling, improved food safety and security, market linkages etc.
  • Develop adequate and appropriate capacity building materials for SHG, private sector, staffs and other project participants.
  • Ensure provision of trainings and subsidies/vouchers for assets and inputs to selected SHG members for off-farm and non-farm vocations.
  • Support capacity building of local agro-input suppliers to provide extension services and climate sustainable agriculture inputs and equipment to local farmers.
  • Organise training of women in dairy, fruit and vegetable preservation and processing using innovative and endogenous approaches, to increase product quality and value, and reduce post-harvest losses.
  • Support team in market and value chain assessments to identify market opportunities and barriers, share the finding with relevant stakeholders and consider its finding when planning and implementing activities.
  • Support provision of seed grants to the SHG to initiate revolving loan schemes.
  • Support cash for work schemes to strengthen value chains and market access, rehabilitate or construct livelihoods assets, and enhance watershed management.
  • Facilitate market linkages for community-level producers and businesses at the district, provincial and national levels.
  • Develop community business and marketing modules and link community target beneficiaries with key enterprises.
  • Collaborate with religious leaders and other community key members to advocate for economic inclusion of marginalized groups.
  • Other related tasks as assigned by line manager.

Effective Coordination and Project Management

  • Timely and effectively monitor the project outcomes to meet the deadlines and liaise directly with the Project Manager.
  • Facilitate and lead the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats analysis, on a yearly basis, to record best practices, lessons learnt, gaps and action points to increase internal learning and better implementation of the programme.
  • Assist the Project Manager in the design and implementation of appropriate agro-business and value chain plans.
  • Mentor Project Officers and Community Development Facilitators (CDFs) through trainings, mentoring and supervision.
  • Review and adapt the project activities on an ongoing basis based on lessons learnt and emerging community needs in consultation with Project Manager.
  • Orient project staff, district and provincial stakeholders on their roles and responsibilities, key project deliverables and project timeline.

Monitoring and Evaluation Reporting and Communication

  • In coordination with the Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) team, develop weekly/monthly monitoring engagement plans.
  • Supervise monitoring of project progress per approved performance indicators.
  • Ensure project progress, data and monitoring visit reports are shared with the MEAL team and Programme Grants and Reporting Manager.
  • Support MEAL team during field assessments.
  • Prepare and share project updates with the Project Manager on a weekly basis.
  • Prepare and submit high quality internal and donor narrative reports highlighting progress at output and outcomes level where appropriate in line with organization and donor reporting requirements.
  • Support the preparation of case studies and stories of change and ensure that these are shared with the Project Manager.

 

Capacity Building:

  • Conduct capacity assessments and trainings and collaborate with Concern HQ to adapt relevant training materials. Conduct necessary trainings to CDFs on business development and value chains (marketing, packaging, processing, and selling).

Representation and Coordination

  • Act as Concern’s focal point for relevant sector(s) and actively participate in coordination platforms, ensuring proper representation of Concern at provincial and district level.
  • Work closely with HQ Advisors for technical support as and when required in consultation with the Project Manager.

CHS & Emergency:

  • Concern is committed to the Common Humanitarian Standards (CHS) to ensure accountability to all stakeholders. Concern activities guided by CHS in all stages both emergency and development projects /programs. Job Requirements

Qualification & Experience:

  • Master degree in Agribusiness, Business Administration, Marketing or other closely related fields.
  • Good knowledge of agri-business in the Afghan context, sound knowledge of theories and practices of business management and marketing in the emergency context.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the fields of agribusiness, value chain development and business management. 
  • Proved expertise in working in the value chain sectors and in adding value to local products, increasing the value in every step of the chain.
  • Ability to analyse the business and value chain and take profitable action accordingly.
  • Track record of project planning and implementation.
  • Working experience in an NGO-development sector is preferred.

Communications:

  • Effective communication skills and ability of leading big to medium teams, also remotely (if necessary).
  • Ability to communicate clearly and sensitively with internal and external stakeholders.

Professional Skills, competencies and qualities:

  • Computer skills: Good knowledge of MS Office package, Outlook and Teams.
  • Fluency in English, Dari and Pashto.
  • Strong cross-cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Ability in delivering and facilitating trainings and group sessions.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with different staff and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently, to structure and assign specific tasks, set priorities and meet deadlines.
