The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA) has been working in Afghanistan since 1982, presently managing development Programs concerning Health, Education, Rural Livelihoods and Community Governance, with a total annual budget of roughly USD 40 million. The total number of staff is slightly over 7,386.During the last 10 years SCA has undertaken a change process moving from a primarily humanitarian service delivery approach towards more of a developmental role, putting increasing emphasis on capacity development, rights-based programming, and outcome orientation. Job Description

Scope of work:

Agriculture Officer is part of the project management team and works directly under the supervision of district manager and in close coordination with Senior Program officer-Economic recovery and project manager.

The Agriculture Officer will implement the project at the community level. She/he will closely work with field staff and project beneficiaries in targeted districts. conduct regular visits to farmer’s field provide technical agriculture training to project farmers distribution agriculture inputs to increase their yield production and improve food security. She/he will also provide support to the district manager in compiling monthly and quarterly Progress Reports. Moreover, Agriculture Officer will be responsible for the day-to-day implementation of all the agriculture components. He/she will support all the production, marketing, and capacity building aspects, interventions, and value chains activities. 

Main Responsibilities:

  • Through coordination with the DAIL and local stakeholder, the incumbent will select communities which are hit by drought. 
  • In order to introduce the alternative of chemical fertilizers, this postholder will train the target farmers on how to prepare compost and how they can get benefits while compost is ready for application.
  • The incumbent will provide practical training to the farmers in line with cereal crops & vegetable life cycle.
  • Provide technical advice and information to the target beneficiaries through training and demonstration on improved agriculture production.
  • Conduct visits to district programme site at 90 % time to field to observe and assess the performance of target beneficiaries’ and provide to them information and technical advice as required.   
  • Conduct regular visits to farmer’s fields, identify technical problems investigate causes, advise effective solutions to farmers and commercial growers to assure crop quality and low crop damage and ensure increased crop production levels.  
  • Will carry out the beneficiary profiling, post distribution and post harvesting survey in the field.
  • Will closely work with local facilitators and target farmers to implement the project activities and will send monthly progress report against the agreed objectives and outcomes.
  • Participation in procurement of agriculture inputs improved wheat seeds, Alfalfa seeds & vegetables.
  • Preparing kitchen gardening & Agriculture related training manual.
  • Responsible for preparation of distribution points, distribution list and other require tools base on activities needs.
  • Conduct experiments to develop new or improved varieties of field crops focusing on characteristics such as yield quality disease resistance nutritional value or adaptation to specific soils or climates.
  • Responsible for establishment of the nursery in the targeted communities, with regular overseeing the plants growth and diseases control.  
  • Document and share case studies success stories and field visit reports as and when required.
  • Responsible for conducting technical trainings on cereal crops, orchard management and agro technique to farmers.

Any other task assigned by district manager.       

 

Job Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from recognized university in agriculture or an associated field.
  • At least 3-5 years’ work experiences in a similar position with a well-known INGO or UN agencies.
  • Technical skills in community-based activities for agriculture interventions (seed distribution, establishment of demonstration plot & kitchen gardening).
  • Having clear concept of food security interventions.
  • A proven ability to communicate with colleagues, work in a team and report on achievements in clear concise terms.
  • Clearly proven ability to work in conservative rural societies with a positive gender focus that enhances the full participation of women Self-motivated
  • Computer skill at operator level, especially with MS Office packages.
  • To be innovative, creative and have the ability to deal with different models for service delivery with special focus on community participation strategies.
  • To have an excellent command in English, Pashto, and Dari (spoken & written).
  • Good computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and Internet.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and capacity to deal with different rural communities with varied political/socio-economic and educational backgrounds.
  • Sound communication skills, to be honest, well mannered.
  • Ready to work, live and travel in an intricate and strenuous environment.
  • To be an Afghan citizen.
